The Naryn Regional Museum (Kyrgyz: Нарын облустук музейи) is a historical museum located in Naryn, the central part of Kyrgyzstan, dedicated to exhibiting various cultural elements.

History

The museum was designated by the Council of Ministries of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Kyrgyzstan in 1985, later in 1997, after the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Naryn Foundation, additionally in 2011, the museum was named in honor of Kaken Mambetalieva (Kyrgyz: Какен Мамбеталиева), one of the first female ethnologists in Kyrgyzstan.[1]

In April 2014, the museum received archaeological donations from Naryn State University found in Kochkor-Bashi (Kyrgyz: Кочкор-Башы) such as a stone grain grider dating back to the Kara-Khanid Khanate era in addition to an aluminum teapot and a silver ring.[2] In May 2014, a competition was held to rank the best cultural center in the Naryn Region at the museum.[3]

In May 2016, on the occasion of the International Museum Day, an exhibition about women's contributions to science and ethnography in Kyrgyzstan was held, supported by the K. Mambetalieva Public Foundation (Kyrgyz: К. Мамбеталиевой).[4]

Collections

Among the museum's exhibits are a collection of ancient weapons found in the ruins of Fort Koshoy-Korgon dating from the 7th-10th century, as well as artifacts from medieval houses found at Tash Rabat and photographs of rock paintings found at Saimaluu-Tash tract (Kyrgyz: Саймалуу-Таш).[5]

In 2013, the museum received several donations of woven objects following the third international festival of folklore and decorative arts, including Ayak-kap (Kyrgyz: Аяк-кап), a type of backpack for storing utensils; Ala kiyiz (Kyrgyz: ала кийиз), a type of traditional carpet in Central Asia; Tekche (Kyrgyz: Текче), a bag used by women to store shoes, skirts and other types of clothing.[6]
