The Cartago Municipal Museum (Spanish: Museo Municipal de Cartago) is a historical museum located in the center of Costa Rica, dedicated to exhibiting various art collections of the province.

History

The museum is located in an old building whose construction dates back to 1910, originally served as the Old Command of the Public Force, then in 2010, the building was transferred to the Ministry of Culture of Costa Rica for the creation of a central museum that preserves mainly works of art and historical objects of the Canton.[1]

The building was listed as part of the Architectural Heritage of Costa Rica in 1984, the process of remodeling the building to officially convert it cost around 600 million colones, additionally the museum received a donation from the Colegio de San Luis Gonzaga of a coat of arms when the current territory of Costa Rica used to be part of the Spanish Empire, additionally a mural of the Guarco Valley, where one of the first indigenous settlements near Cartago was developed, was exhibited.[2]

In September 2021, an exhibition about Costa Rica's Bicentennial was launched, where the 29th October Hall (Spanish: Salon 29 de Octubre) was inaugurated. The exhibition included oil paintings of the events of the Independence of Costa Rica from the Federal Republic of Central America, including the Act of Independence signed in Guatemala City, as well as recreations of the Chapter House of the Cabildo of Cartago, where the enamation of the Republic of Costa Rica was proclaimed.[3]

In October 2023, an exhibit was launched to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Cartago Chamber of Commerce at the museum, showing a collection of about 50 old photos from the 20th century, specifically photographs of merchants trying to recover economically after the 1910 earthquake, as well as the meetings held at the Apolo Theater, and the creation of the ZETA Industrial Park in the 1970s.[4]

Collections

In January 2021, the museum launched an exhibition showcasing over 120 works by Carmen Naranjo, a renowned Costa Rican diplomat and writer, the works span the visual arts and include methods of elaboration with nibs and crayons, as well as documentation about Costa Rican literature, in collaboration with the National Library System and the National Institute of Apprenticeship.[5]
