The Tomsk Local History Museum (Russian: Томский областной краеведческий музей) is a historical museum located in the Russian city of Tomsk, specifically in the Siberian part of the country. The museum is focused on showing the history of the settlement of the city as well as ethnographic objects such as antique furniture and stuffed animals found in the oblast.

History

The building where the museum was established was formerly used as the Bishop's House. In 1922, the museum officially opened to the public.[1] The building was designed by Alexander Petrovich Deev (Russian: Алексе́й Петро́вич Де́ев), this building was built by 1838 and 1842.[2]

In the 1920s, the museum received donations from oblast explorers following an expedition to Narym, a town north of Tomsk, near the Ket River, for the purpose of documenting animal species in the area, including fish specimens and various bird skins and feathers. By 1930, the museum had more than 3,000 items in its zoological collection.[3]

Collections

In 1929, a collection of more than 80 pieces of porcelain produced in Russia was sent from the Moscow Porcelain Museum to the Tomsk Museum for an exhibition dedicated to the history of porcelain in the country.[4]

After the 100th anniversary of the opening of the museum gave several exhibits about how the Eushta (Siberian Tatar: яушталар transl. Yaushtalar) communities, one of the groups that are part of the Siberian Tatars, settled in Tomsk Oblast, in addition to exhibits about the formation of the first fort located in the city after the incorporation of the territory to Russia. Other exhibits include collections of antique furniture as well as headdresses made by women from Tomsk.[5]
