The Banteay Meanchey Provincial Museum (Khmer: សារមន្ទីរខេត្តបន្ទាយមានជ័យ) is a historical museum located in Sisophon City in northwestern Cambodia, dedicated to display mainly archaeological objects found in the province ranging from statues and inscriptions found in tombs, temples and irrigation system for the formation of agriculture.

History

The museum was established in 2009 after assistance from the Royal Government and local organizations to display archaeological items from the province such as the excavation of pottery in the Kouk Treas (Khmer: គោកទ្រាស) cemetery, which dates back to the Iron Age.[1]

Additionally the museum has received donations from several excavations carried out in the province, among them is the discovery of several ancient tombs made by the Ministry of Culture of Australia and the University of Sydney, inside the tombs were found bronze jewelry and other metal objects, additionally in 2012 was discovered a place used for burial ceremonies after the construction of National Route 56, where several of the artifacts were brought to the museum.[2]

Collections

In September 2010, several stone heads dating back to the 12th century were discovered in the water channel connecting the Banteay Chhmar Temple (Khmer: ប្រាសាទបន្ទាយឆ្មារ) in the north of the province.[3]

In addition, the museum features statues made of various metals ranging from copper, bronze and laterite, as well as antique pots and plates. These artifacts were found in agricultural irrigation systems made of stone and clay, as well as stations for melting materials in kilns.[4] In 2019, a stone inscription with engravings in ancient Khmer script dating from the reign of Jayavarman V was transferred to the museum, such excavations were carried out by the Royal Academy of Cambodia at Tuol Prasat Knong (Khmer: ទួលប្រាសាទក្នុង) in Malai District.[5]
