The Lampung Provincial Museum (Indonesian: Museum Provinsi Lampung) is a museum located in the south of Sumatra Island, characterized by displaying cultural objects and traditional architecture of the province.

History

Initiatives to establish the museum in Lampung began in 1975 and was fully completed on September 24, 1988.[1] From 1984, the research center for Pugungraharjo was created within the museum area, an archaeological site discovered in the 1950s in the East Lampung Regency.[2]

Collections

The museum has a collection of traditional Indonesian musical instruments, such as Kendang, also known as Gendang, which consists of a two-sided cylindrical wooden drum, in addition to a Gambus, a mandolin-like stringed instrument brought from the Middle East to various regions of Southeast Asia, as well as a xylophone made of bamboo called Kolintang from North Sulawesi.[3]

The museum has exhibits from different communities in Lampung, such as the Inuh tapestries made of silk by the Saibatin people, who lived on the coast of the province, and exhibits on ceremonies of the Pepadun people, who lived in the interior of Lampung.[4]

The museum also has recreations of traditional houses of the province, among them Lamban Pesagi originating in the mountainous areas west of Lampung, in addition to vessels created in the Bronze Age, used to store holy water for religious events, such vessels were found in the eastern part of Lampung.[5] In addition, the museum also features miniature recreations of Nuwo Balak, a type of house native to the communities residing in Lampung.[6]
