The Korça Archeological Museum (Albanian: Muzeu Arkeologjik Korçë) is an archaeological museum located in the southeast of Albania, dedicated to show ancient pottery discovered in several neolithic sites of the Korça Basin.

History

The museum is located in a 19th century building, and was established in 1985 to store objects and artifacts found in various archaeological sites in southeastern Albania such as the Bronze Age Maliq Illa and the Trajan Castle located northwest of the town of Tren.[1]

The museum is located in the historical center of Korça, also known as Mysafirhane locally, it is one of the buildings of the city that presents a design based on Ottoman architecture, built around 1870, when the territory of today's Albania used to be part of the Ottoman Empire.[2]

The museum has collections of swords, jugs and vases from the Neolithic Era and the Early Medieval Period, although part of those collections had to be restored by the museum's ceramics specialists after the 2019 earthquake.[3]

Collections

After a series of excavations of the Kamenicë tombs located in the southern part of Korça basin, starting from the year 2000. A series of bones found in several graves of Kamenicë were transported to the museum, the construction of these tumuli dates back to the 6th and 7th century BC. The museum has pottery exhibits from several Neolithic Era sites, such as Vashtëmi, located near the Devoll River, in addition to Dunaveci, another archaeological site located near the junction of the aforementioned river and Dunavec.[4]

The museum exhibits covering the Bronze Age area include pottery collections from Barç and Kuç I Zi, archaeological sites in the western part of the Moravian Mountains near the urban center of Korça.[5]
