The Tokaj's World Heritage Wine Museum (Hungarian: Világörökségi Bormúzeum) is a historical museum located in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén in northwestern Hungary, dedicated to explaining the history of wine production around this region of the country.

History

The museum is located in a Serház, roughly translated as "Beer House" in Hungarian, which are buildings used for the production and marketing of beer in the country.[1] This building is located in one of the historical parts of the city around the Old Tokaj Synagogue and the Paulay Ede Theater. From the 17th century, several wine merchants of Jewish origin began to settle in this part of Tokaj for the promotion of wine production in the region.[2]

During May 2016, the museum collaborated with the Eastern Slovak Museum in Košice to show a temporary exhibition about the nearby regions of Eastern Hungary and Slovakia.[3]

Collections

The museum presents exhibits about the development of tools used in the creation of wine within the Tokaj region, in addition to information about the history of the town where the museum is located.[4]

The museum displays exhibits about the Tokaj-Hegyalja region, characterized as one of the most important wine producing areas in Hungary, which is classified by UNESCO as a cultural heritage site. In addition, the museum also presents collections from the other UNESCO-recognized wine producing areas in Europe. In addition, the museum also presents collections of archaeological pieces found in this region of Hungary as well as exhibits about the religious traditions of the country.[5]
