The Jablonec nad Nisou Glass And Jewelry Museum (Czech: Muzeum skla a bižuterie v Jablonci nad Nisou) is an art museum located within the Liberec Region, Northern Czechia.

History

The idea of establishing an art museum in Jablonec nad Nisou was conceived by the City's Industry and Education Support Association around 1868, but it was only in 1904 that the first permanent exhibition was held in the museum, the building was redesigned by Czech architect Emilian Herbig in 1904, and in 1958, the building was registered as a national cultural monument. In 2003, the museum was recognized as a state cultural institution by the Czech Ministry of Culture.[1]

In June 2022, several Bohemian artisans designed several crystal glasses with decorations representing the culture of each member country of the European Union.[2]

Collections

The museum is characterized by exhibits of jewelry, medals, plaques and artifacts made of glass dating from different centuries in the Czechia's History, among these collections are clothing accessories belonging to the collection of Waldes.[3]

In 2022, the museum organized an exhibition of handicrafts created during the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic period, including works made by František Vízner, Jiřina Žertová, René Roubíček, Stanislav Libenský and Věra Lišková, one of the key points of the exhibition is to show the techniques used in the manufacture of glass and jewelry from the mid-1950s, in which Czechoslovakia gradually became a producer of glass for the rest of Eastern Europe.[4]

Additionally the museum also exhibited some Céčka decorations, which are plastic objects used in costume jewelry, which were popular around the '80s and '90s around Czechoslovakia.[4] The museum also presents in one of its exhibits a necklace measuring about 220 meters in length made by students of the Jablonec School of Arts and Crafts and donated to the museum in 1994.[6]
