The Surin National Museum (Thai: พิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติ สุรินทร์) is an ethnographic and archaeological museum located in the east of Thailand, specialized in exhibiting antiquities and cultural elements native to the province.

History

The Surin Museum was originally created at the initiative of the Provincial Governor Suthee Obom in 1974, who encouraged people including government officials and Surin merchants to donate antiquities, which were originally exhibited at the City Hall. Subsequently, the museum was transferred to the Surin Provincial Education Office Building, after receiving antiquities from archaeological investigations, in addition to antiquities from local inhabitants. In 1996, the Department of Fine Arts began the construction of a specialized building to house the National Museum. Around the beginning of 2018, the museum exhibited ceramic works made by students from the school of Ban Chang Pi, a village located in Sikhoraphum District. In 2021, several archaeologists from Thailand's Department of Fine Arts discovered jars estimated to be more than 1,000 years old in Mueang Surin district, which were transported to the province's National Museum.

Collections

The museum includes exhibits from different ethnic groups that inhabit the province of Surin, including ethnographic and cultural elements of Khmer, Laotian and Kuy origin. In 2022, the museum organized an exhibition about the history of the Surin province's native elephants, in collaboration with several members and scientists from the Department of Fine Arts and the Local Elephant Research Center, this exhibition also incorporated information about Surin's old provincial flags, some of which implemented elephant illustrations to represent the local fauna.
