History of Google Street View / Turkey
At the end of October 2015, Google Street View (Turkish: Google Sokak Görünümü) was officially introduced to Turkey, the coverage mainly extended in the capital cities of a large part of the country's provinces.[1] For the initial release of the coverage in the country, around 70 Turkish provinces were photographed.[2]
In June 2015, the Turkish news site Onedio reported that Google had tested several trekkers to capture images of historical sites on the Gallipoli Peninsula as well as landmarks in Istanbul such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultanahmet Camii).[3]
Although the Google Street View project to provide the country's streets with images culminated in October 2015 and the "Special Collections" project started much earlier, specifically in May 2014 with the release of trekker coverage of several historical monuments in Ankara such as Anıtkabir.[4] In November 2015, Google Turkey officially launched views inside and around the facilities of Atatürk International Airport located in Bakırköy, Istanbul.[5]
Additionally, the Google Cultural Institute has collaborated with several museums in Istanbul, among them is Salt Galata which was photographed using a trolley during May 2014, the collaboration for Google Arts and Culture was officially announced at the end of September 2014.[6] In March 2015, Google Turkey announced its second collaboration with a Turkish museum which was the Museum of Innocence (Turkish: Masumiyet Müzesi) located in the Beyoğlu District, which was covered in October 2014 with a trolley.[7]
In late 2023, Google launched views of various historical and archaeological sites around several Turkish provinces in collaboration with the Directorate General of Cultural Assets and Museums (Turkish: Kültür Varlıkları ve Müzeler Genel Müdürlüğü), among the places that were photographed were the Göbeklitepe, an archaeological site in Şanlıurfa Province, the Galata Tower as well as several Turkish museums such as the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara and the Museum of Islamic and Turkish Art in Istanbul.[8]
The company in charge of providing Google Street View in Turkey is İki Nokta Bilişim Teknolojileri, one of the first mapping companies in the country, currently based in Istanbul. This can be seen on the blue sticker of the cars equipped with cameras where the company's logo can be seen.[9]
