History of Google Street View / Qatar
Google's first steps to bring Street View to Qatar began in early 2012, following a collaboration with the Google Cultural Institute and the Qatar Museums Authority to digitise exhibits at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.[1]
In 2016, Google confirmed the release of coverage within the facilities of Hamad International Airport in Doha.[2] In addition, the interior of an A380 Qatar Airways aircraft was photographed with a tripod camera as a result of the collaboration with the airport.
Following the planning of the World Cup in Qatar, several pickups equipped with Gen 4 cameras started to navigate several areas near the stadiums in Doha, Al Khor and Al Wrakah in late 2022.[3]
The coverage included the parking facilities as well as the facilities that were to be used for the events such as stadiums of Al Janoub (Arabic: إستاد الجنوب), Al Thumama (Arabic: استاد الثمامة), Al Bayt (Arabic: استاد البيت) and Lusail (Arabic: استاد لوسيل)
In early 2023, the process of expanding the existing coverage began, where Google started to cover residential, commercial as well as tourist sites around Qatar, starting first with Doha and later with other cities such as Al Khor. This coverage was finally published in November 2023.[4]
