History of Google Street View / Peru
As of December 2012, Google first drove in the city of Lima, in August 2013, Maite Iturria, former Street View manager for Latin America, indicated that about 12 major cities in Peru and 5 departments had been officially covered by Google.[1]
In April 2015, Google Latin America officially launched trekker views of several historical sites in Lima including the Basilica Cathedral of Lima, the National Stadium of Peru, the Santo Domingo Convent and the Archbishop's Palace of Lima.[2] In June 2015, Google launched views using trekker in collaboration with Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado, to provide street view of the Paracas National Reserve in the Department of Ica and the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve in the Department of Arequipa.[3]
The capture process with the support of SERNANP started in 2013 and was published in June 2015 to celebrate World Environment Day.[4]
Later in August 2015, Google officially launched trekker views for several tourist sites in the city of Arequipa in southern Peru.[5] In the same month, Google made an agreement with the Ministry of Culture to digitize part of the archaeological sites of the Department of Lambayeque such as Tucume, Huaca del Oro and Sontillo.[6] Although the coverage was not published.
In December 2015, Google announced Street View for the archaeological site of Macchu Picchu in the Department of Cuzco through the use of Trekkers.[7] In 2016, CyroPeru used the Google Trekker Loan Program to photograph several hiking trails in the Tanta District in the Department of Lima.[8]
Additionally Google Peru has worked in the digitization of several museums in the country such as the Regional Museum of Ica, the Andean Sanctuaries Museum in Arequipa and the Yanque Museum.[9] In 2014, Club Universitario de Deportes, a Peruvian sports institution based in Lima, announced its collaboration with Google to provide street view of several stadiums around the capital such as the Estadio Monumental U located in Ate.[10]
