History of Google Street View / Mongolia
In October 2014, Google officially announced with various Mongolian Government authorities that it was going to introduce street view to the city of Ulaanbaatar.[1] In March 2015, the Google Street View vehicle photographed parts of Darkhan's cities in addition to photographing historical sites such as the City's Buddha Statue.[2]
At the end of March 2015, Google Street View cars began photographing part of Erdenet.[3] In June 2015, the Google Street View car went to photograph the Aimag of Dornod specifically Choibalsan and Khalkhgol.[4] In addition, in June this year, Google also photographed Aimag de Selenge, where part of the avenues of Sukhbaatar were covered as well as several monasteries and Buddhist monuments.[5]
Between August and September 2015, Google photographed parts of the city of Murun as well as lakes and nature reserves in the Aimag of Hövsgöl.[6]
In the middle of 2016, Google covered more cities in central and western Mongolia as well as several trails in national parks, such as Altai Tavan Bogd National Park (Mongolian: Алтай Таван Богд БЦГ), Khyargas Lake (Mongolian: Хяргас Нуур БЦГ) & Khan Khokhii (Mongolian: Хан Хөхий БЦГ).
The Street View project was also supported by the National Museum of Mongolia (Mongolian: Монголын Үндэсний Музей) to digitize part of the museum's rooms and collections.[7] In addition, Google has collaborated with several historical museums in Ulaanbaatar such as the Bogd Khan Palace Museum where discussions to add the museum to street view were held in June 2014.[8]
In 2017, Google introduced views made with traditional house tripods in several countries around the world, including yurts in Mongolia.[9] In August 2022, it was announced that part of Ulaanbaatar had been upgraded using poor quality cameras.[10]
In 2023, it was announced that the street view update project in Ulaanbaatar would replace the unofficial cameras with Gen 4 Trekkers provided by Google.[11] In June 2024, Google confirmed that it was going to cover part of western Mongolia including cities such as Darkhan.[12]
