History of Google Street View / Jordan
Google launched the first views of Jordan in late 2015, the coverage included trekker and tripod views of various historical sites, museums and archaeological sites such as Petra and Jerash.[1]
In April 2015, the Madaba Tourism Directorate officially announced that Google was going to photograph several historical sites in the governorate.[2]
In November 2015, Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan announced about Google's collaboration with the Jordanian Ministry of Culture, and how the new views of monuments around the country would boost tourism as well as heritage preservation, being the fifth major landmark image collection for the Google Street View Project within Middle East & North Africa, after the digitization of monuments in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Cairo.[3]
Part of the filming of the Petra Ruins were photographed by Zain Masri using a Google Trekker to cover different parts of the historical sites.[4]
In January 2017, the Alghad Newspaper reported that the Google Street View car was driving in the Al Abdali Commercial District (Arabic: منطقة العبدلي), Central Amman.[5] In February 2017, the Facebook group for Amman Google Local Guides announced that the project to introduce Street View to Jordan was being completed.[6]
In April 2017, the Google Earth team officially announced the publication of imagery on traditional dwellings around the world including a Bedouin tent in the Wadi Rum Protected Area within the Aqaba Governorate.[7] In April 2018, Google officially released the street view of several Jordanian cities.[8]
The company in charge of bringing street view to the country was Kiwi Media Solutions, in mid-2018, the company announced a press release about the process carried out by their team such as digitization of several avenues in Amman and other Jordanian cities as well as views made with a trekker of historical sites.[9]
