History of Google Street View / Ghana
In February 2016, Google began driving for the first time in Ghana. Following progress with Project Link designed to provide better connectivity for Internet providers and mobile network operators in the country in late 2015.[1]
Google's Project Link enabled several countries such as Uganda and Senegal to access Google Street View and it was reported in January 2016 that a trekker had arrived in Accra.[2]
In February 2017, Google Africa officially announced street view for Ghana along with Senegal and coverage of some national parks in Uganda, in addition to several tourist sites in the country photographed with the trekker and tripods such as the Nzulezo Villa located on Lake Tadane and the National Theatre in Accra.[3]
In addition, the Google Street View project was able to collaborate with the Ghana Forest Commission to photograph several of the country's national parks in 2016.[4] In addition, several fortifications on the Ghanaian coast such as the Elmina Castle were also photographed.[5]
Regarding Kumasi, Ghana's second largest city, as of July 2016, Google started photographing various tourist sites in the city such as the National Cultural Center, the Zoological Gardens as well as markets and carpentry centers in the suburb of Pankrono.
In late 2016, the Street View team in Ghana took tripod views of several cultural institutions such as the Pan-African Memorial Center Du Bois in the Cantonments suburb of Accra.
