History of Google Street View / Ecuador
In 2013, several trekkers were sent to cover the Galapagos Islands in collaboration with the Charles Darwin Foundation.[1] In late 2014, several Google Street View cars started circulating in urban areas of Ecuador.[2] In November 2014, Google sent a trekker to photograph several trails around Mount Rucu in Pinchincha Province.
Additionally, in November 2014, Google sent several trekkers to photograph the university campus of San Francisco de Quito University in Cumbayá.
In early 2015, Google began collaborating with the Municipal Tourism Company of Guayaquil to provide trekking views in various historical and tourist sites in the city such as parks and stadiums.[3]
Additionally several Ecuadorian nature reserves were covered such as boat views of Machalilla National Park in the Province of Manabi. In February 2015, Google began photographing several nature reserves in the Province of Chimborazo including hiking trails on El Altar Volcano and Ozogoche Lagoons
In March 2015, Google started photographing historical sites in the city of Cuenca such as the Pumapungo Ruins, Calderón Historical Park and the University of Cuenca Campus.[4] At the end of 2015, Google officially announced the release of street view for Ecuador and Bolivia.[5]
From 2022 to 2023, the Ecuadorian company Aneta started to update part of the existing coverage in Ecuador, although it was using poor quality cameras. In 2024, Aneta together with Google started to change the setup and cameras used in Ecuador and decided to opt for Gen 4 cameras in pickups.
The Gen 4 Pickups have spent around 7 months updating most of the suburbs of Quito with the addition of new zones around Ilaló Mountain. Between August and October 2024, Google's vehicles began to photograph part of the metropolitan area of Guayaquil, specifically the city centre.
