In July 2013, Google announced that it was going to tour the streets of Cambodia, specifically focusing on Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.[1] The project was supervised by the APSARA Authority which is in charge of the preservation of temples such as Angkor Wat and the government of Phnom Penh Municipality.[2]

In April 2014, Google made a press release in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism of Cambodia, explaining the realization of the project on the grounds that bringing street view to the country will attract more tourists, in addition to the digitization of several temples in the Angkor Wat area with about 90,000 images stored for the Google Cultural Institute and Street View projects.[3]

The Street View project, which covered most of the streets of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in total, in addition to main roads in 10 provinces, along with the inclusion of Khmer in Google Translate in 2014-2013, was part of the company's initiative to expand into the country's market.[4]

Google had intended to cover the capital in August 2013 but after several marches due to the results of the Cambodian general elections, it had to be postponed. In April 2014, Google also released additional trekker views of several temples in other provinces such as Preah Vihear, where images were collected from about 22 sites, as well as 12 temples in Kampong Thom. In July 2015, Google completed the Google Street View project with gen 3 cameras.[5]

In late 2014, Google sent a trekker camera in order to record parts of the beaches and trails on Koh Rong Island in Preah Sihanouk province.[6] In 2014, the local media I love Pursat, clarified that coverage of much of the province had already been published and clarified that the Google Maps team stayed at Thansour Thmei Hotel when they had to photograph this region in Cambodia.[7] Additionally this year, Google added street view to part of Stung Treng Province.[8]

Additionally, Google's Cambodia team posted views on trekkers within Ratanakiri Province, including coverage at Tak Nang Temple (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាណាង), Yak Loum Lake (Khmer: បឹងយក្សឡោម), Aur Chalav Waterfall (Khmer: ទឹកធ្លាក់អូចារឡាវ) and Ban Lung's Indigenous People Culture Center (Khmer: មជ្ឈមណ្ឌលវប្បធម៌ជនជាតិដើម).[9]

As of 2022, Google started to cover part of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap with poor quality cameras, resulting in the deterioration of the previous coverage with gen 3 cameras.
